Responding to a data security incident can be daunting enough on its own.  In the world of higher education, it can be a risk management and legal minefield.  And beyond this, the cost of responding to an incident can be higher for a higher education institution, as can the difficulty in aligning relevant stakeholders for efficient and timely incident response.  This discussion will present real-life incident scenarios facing higher education, and outline proven strategies for effective incident response.  These scenarios will be annotated to highlight issue spotting, risk mitigation tactics, and appropriate communication strategies.  The goal of the discussion is to leave participants better prepared for their institution’s next incident, including in relation to how to properly leverage insurance in incident response.
