Navigating OMIG Medicaid Payment and Compliance Program Audits: Audit Process, Compliance Program Requirements, and Strategies for Minimizing Recoupment

August 1, 2024
11:00 am - 12:30 pm

The New York State Office of the Medicaid Inspector General (OMIG), an independent office within the Department of Health, is responsible for auditing payments to Medicaid providers and recouping overpayments. OMIG’s audit process, including its use of sampling and extrapolation, can result in large recoveries for minor technical errors unrelated to patient care that can be financially devastating to providers. In addition, OMIG is responsible for overseeing and reviewing mandated provider compliance programs and has the authority to impose monetary and other penalties against providers who do not meet compliance program requirements.

Please join Financial Managers Association and Harter Secrest & Emery for a webinar on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at 11:00 am – 12:30 pm to learn about the OMIG payment audit process. HSE partner Jennie Shufelt will address:

  1. Strategies for defending OMIG audits and minimizing recoupment
  2. Recurring issues that arise in OMIG audits and lead to payment recoveries
  3. The revised compliance program requirements published in December 2022, and key elements of an effective and efficient compliance program
  4. Strategies for preventing and minimizing errors that can lead to recoupment, including the role of a provider’s billing and compliance functions in preventing and deterring noncompliance, and identifying and correcting errors early
