Amy L. Hemenway, partner in the Labor and Employment practice, was recently featured in a Buffalo Business First article about employer concerns with cannabis use in the workplace. In “Worried About Weed at Work? This Expert Has Pointers on Pot Policies,” Amy describes that employers are concerned because legal cannabis is new and can create changes in the way things are being done. “Employers and employees want consistency. They want to know what to expect. The guidance that’s come out isn’t super clear, and there are a lot of unknowns.”

Amy offers many tips in the article, including encouraging employers to think of cannabis use like alcohol usage – it’s legal, but not appropriate for work. Amy states, “Employers should use similar techniques to identify signs of cannabis use as they would for suspected alcohol consumption.”
