Trump’s Win Likely to Spur Deals for Capital Markets

What Trump’s Win Could Mean for Capital Markets From an Attorney’s Perspective

Law360 reached out to Securities attorneys C. Christopher Murillo and Margaret K. Rhoda to gain perspective on how the election results are likely to impact capital markets.

“Regardless of what side of the ballot you checked, it’s clear that there’s a winner and there will be a smooth transition of power,” Harter Secrest & Emery LLP partner Chris Murillo told Law360. “That is going to be a real catalyst to release some of the logjam in the capital markets that we’ve experienced over the last year and a half or so.”

Harter Secrest’s Murillo also said to expect “principles-based regulations” in the Trump administration, meaning a regulatory approach that relies on broad, high-level statements to pursue goals, rather than prescriptive and detailed requirements. He noted that market participants would likely find a principles-based approach more flexible.

“We’ll also be looking to see what happens with respect to tariffs, because that’s just another piece in the puzzle,” said Margaret Rhoda of Harter Secrest. “So even if the tax cuts [are approved], a different cost can be applied.”
