Harter Secrest & Emery Announces Diversity Scholarship Winners

800 N9800 YHarter Secrest & Emery LLP, a full-service business law firm with offices throughout New York, announced that it has awarded two scholarships to first-year law school students (1L), Niyobuhungiro Godfroid and Yomaris Sanchez-Orona from the University at Buffalo School of Law, as part of the firm’s annual Diversity Scholarship Program. This is the third time the firm has awarded two scholarships in the same year since the program began in 2005. The scholarships include a $7,500 award to be applied to the recipient’s law school tuition and paid summer associate positions at the firm.

“Our Diversity Scholarship Program has been an important part of our hiring efforts for many years now. This year, the quality of the students compelled us to award scholarships and extend summer associate offers to two exceptional candidates,” said Jeffrey A. Wadsworth, Harter Secrest & Emery’s Hiring Partner. “We are thrilled to welcome Yoma and Godfroid into the HSE family and look forward to working with them.”

“Harter Secrest & Emery is committed to reflecting the diversity of our clients and communities by recruiting, retaining and promoting the best talent in our markets,” added Craig S. Wittlin, Firm Managing Partner. “This begins with law students, so we are very pleased to welcome Yomaris and Godfroid, who have already demonstrated many of the characteristics that clients have come to expect from HSE.”

Godfroid, a student at the University at Buffalo School of Law, earned his B.A. in Political Science and Communications from Boston College where he participated on the African Students Organization and as the AHANA+ Caucus representative and culture coordinator. He was also part of the class council where he served as a marketing coordinator. Before starting law school, Godfroid was an intern at Ropes & Gray LLP in Boston, MA.

Sanchez-Orona, also a student at the University at Buffalo School of Law, earned her B.A. in History, with a minor in Communication and Criminal Justice from Roberts Wesleyan College where she served as a professor’s assistant in the History department and worked as a radiology assistant at Rochester Regional Health.

Since 2005, Harter Secrest & Emery has awarded a scholarship annually to a first-year law student selected on the basis of their academic record, work experience, and additional personal and professional attributes that demonstrate great promise for a successful career in the legal profession. Over the past decade, several scholarship winners have joined Harter Secrest & Emery after completing law school.
