Harter Secrest & Emery Launches General Counsel Services Practice with Addition of Former General Counsel from Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. and Aleron Group

Rochester, New York, May 16, 2024– Harter Secrest & Emery LLP, a full-service business law firm with offices throughout New York, has launched a General Counsel Services practice led by experienced former general counsel. Stephen R. Van Arsdale, former general counsel at Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. in Rochester, New York, and Mark J. Stuhlmiller, former general counsel at Aleron Group in Buffalo, New York recently joined the firm and will lead the new practice with Harter Secrest & Emery counsel Edward J. Pelta, who served as general counsel at Gleason Corporation and ALSTOM Signaling, Inc.

Leveraging Harter Secrest & Emery’s full-service capabilities, attorneys in the General Counsel Services practice provide clients with and without in-house legal departments with a dedicated team of attorneys who know their business and can triage day-to-day legal needs, offer strategic advice, and provide timely and strategic assistance, including in specialized areas of law, from a more cost-effective model.

“We understand that many organizations do not have the resources for a fully staffed legal team, and the challenges that in-house counsel face without sufficient internal support,” said Craig S. Wittlin, Managing Partner at Harter Secrest & Emery who currently serves as external general counsel for a leading Northeastern grocery chain. “Collectively, our General Counsel Services team members have experience managing legal departments, orchestrating multidisciplinary teams of lawyers, and serving as the primary counsel to privately-held, publicly-traded, family-run, middle-market and non-profit organizations. By integrating themselves into their clients’ cultures, our attorneys are able to provide clients seamless legal counsel in a way that honors the client’s trust and reflects the client’s core values, with a focus on risk mitigation and cost-efficiency.”

Van Arsdale joins Harter Secrest & Emery’s Rochester office as senior counsel after serving more than 30 years as an in-house attorney, most recently as general counsel, at Wegmans Food Market, Inc., a privately held supermarket chain with operations in eight states. He earned a J.D., with honors, from Duke University School of Law and a B.A., summa cum laude, from Eisenhower College.

Stuhlmiller joins the firm as counsel in its Buffalo office after serving as general counsel since 2018 for Aleron Group, a privately-held international group of talent solutions companies. Prior to his time with Aleron, Stuhlmiller served as corporate counsel, associate general counsel and deputy general counsel with Computer Task Group, Inc., a publicly traded mid-market international IT consulting firm. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional in the U.S. and a Certified Information Privacy Manager by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), earned a LL.M. in Tax from New York University School of Law, and a J.D./M.B.A. and B.S., magna cum laude, from State University of New York at Buffalo.

“Steve, Mark and Ed are talented lawyers who have led sophisticated legal departments, have broad experience creating practical solutions to legal challenges, are exceptional leaders and bring tremendous value to our clients who need the benefit of their experience, but with a more cost-effective approach,” said Wittlin.

Harter Secrest & Emery partners who currently serve as outside general counsel to local, regional and non-profit organizations round out the General Counsel Services team and bring decades of experience serving in outside general counsel roles for companies and organizations of all sizes and in a variety of industries.
