Theresa A. Conroy and Julia Green Sewruk to Speak at National Higher Education Conference

Harter Secrest & Emery LLP announced that two of the firm’s partners, Theresa A. Conroy and Julia Green Sewruk, will lead a discussion on how higher education institutions can prevent sexual harassment on their campuses and effectively respond when harassment complaints are made at The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) Spring Conference on Monday, April 9 in Baltimore.

In a presentation entitled “Sexual Harassment Complaints: What HR Can Learn from the Student Side,” Conroy, Sewruk, and Nazareth College Associate Vice President for Human Resources and Deputy Title IX Coordinator Jo Ellen Pinkham will discuss the ways in which college and university human resources professionals can benefit from a deeper understanding of the work student affairs professionals (within their broader college and university communities) have carried out to combat student sexual misconduct on their campuses, including gauging the campus climate; increasing prevention-focused education; maximizing on-campus resources and response measures; strengthening  anti-harassment policies, reporting systems, and investigations; and delivering effective bystander and compliance training, all with campus leaders spearheading these efforts and ensuring accountability.

CUPA-HR is a national organization with over 23,000 HR professional and over 2,000-member organization. They provide leadership on higher education workplace issues in the U.S. and abroad, monitor trends, explore emerging workforce issues, conduct research and promote strategic discussions among colleges and universities.

Conroy and Green Sewruk are partners in Harter Secrest & Emery’s Higher Education practice group. The firm’s Higher Education attorneys guide institutions through the unique legal, operational, and regulatory challenges colleges and universities face. The group has extensive experience and brings a perspective that goes well beyond the legal question.
