Matthew A. Eldred

Senior Associate

Matt Eldred takes a comprehensive approach to advising clients on a diverse array of environmental, land use, and zoning issues. He conducts environmental due diligence for corporate and real estate transactions, advises clients on the permitting processes, ensures compliance with environmental regulations and health and safety standards, and addresses the legal aspects of land use, zoning regulations, and matters related to the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA). Additionally, Matt advises clients with respect to Brownfields redevelopment projects and a variety of municipal law matters.

Matt also represents municipalities, landowners, and businesses in all stages of renewable energy development, including negotiating subscription agreements, power purchase agreements, revenue sharing agreements, and leases in New York’s highly technical solar energy industry, with projects ranging from less than one megawatt of distributed generation to utility-scale projects of 160 megawatts and larger across the country. Drawing on his broad experience, he provides his clients with fulsome understanding necessary to make educated, confident decisions, balancing the risks and values presented by these unique opportunities carrying lasting effects.

Matt began his legal practice as corporate attorney representing private and public companies on corporate and transactional matters including corporate structure, sales and acquisitions, and trade partner negotiations. Matt’s experience as a corporate practitioner is an invaluable asset and it provides him with a unique perspective in his role as an environmental attorney. His prior corporate experience drives his practical, business-focused and solutions-oriented approach.

Before attending law school, Matt was a land surveyor at a regional engineering firm where he planned and directed teams in completing intricate projects for state, national and multi-national agencies and organizations, ranging from powerline transmission upgrade studies and infrastructure maintenance to theatrical production modeling and archaeological preservation.
